Addendum: Unlockables and Galactic Readiness
First up, I'll give a brief description of Mass Effect 3 multiplayer unlockables. Currently, there are three "packs" in the store that you can purchase to unlock new items, characters, and equipment, and a plethora of event-based and "special" packs posted occasionally.
The Recruit Pack costs 5000 credits, and has only a small chance of giving you something decent. Likely as not you'll just get a pile of random equipment.
The Veteran Pack costs 20,000 credits (or 80 MS Points) and has at least 1 "uncommon" item.
The Spectre Pack will run you 60,000 credits or 160 MS points, and it'll give you at least 1 "rare" item.
Take a look at this page for information on item and character rarity.
As for Galactic Readiness, each match you play and successfully complete increases your overall galactic readiness by a certain percentage (somewhere between 4 and 6%), as well as increasing the galactic readiness of the area in which your map was located by an additional 9%.
In the game proper, Galactic Readiness translates into how many of your war assets count towards the war effort, and translate to your "effective military strength". To give an example, if you've a GRR of 50%, and 10,000 points in war assets, your effective military strength is 5,000. Make sense?
Promoting a character turns them into a war asset worth around 75 points. They're no Shepard, but they're still pretty mighty in their own right.
