Building a Better Game of Hockey

PREVIEW | ? COMMENTS |

Author: Dante' R. Maddox

EA may have suffered a few setbacks in certain arenas, but they are still the undisputed grand champs when it comes to hockey. Despite being number one, EA has recognized that there is room to improve and are apparently making changes accordingly for NHL 12.

One thing that is being overhauled is the "Be a Pro" mode, which allows you to take a player from the beginning to the end of his career. EA promises that the player will have a unique experience as they shatter records and build their player into a legend.

EA also promises that the AI will show considerable improvement over previous efforts. This year, the AI will be able to predict when there is a turnover coming, which will affect player reactions. In other words, there will be no more unrealistic delays in the action on the ice. This will make for a more fluid game overall and not have that jarring effect of unnatural pauses.

Another addition to NHL 12 is the changes in physics when it comes to player contact. Bigger players will have a profound effect on smaller players in a more realistic fashion. Now players can employ strategy, setting their players up on the ice in key positions. No longer will players bump in to each other with no real consequence. EA promises that there will be more animations to go along with the improved collisions. Get ready to see flying helmets, shattered glass, and players being knocked over the boards and into the box.

In games past, goalies have been something of an issue when it comes to realism. Goalies were immoveable objects that the player couldn’t affect in a realistic fashion. Well, "no more of that!" says EA, as goalies are now more a part of the action than ever. Goalies in NHL 12 can be pushed and shoved, knocked out of position and made to slip into the net.

NHL 12 looks phenomenal, and the new effects added seem to be working quite well. Even if you’re not the biggest hockey fan in the world, if you like FIFA and other sports games, you might be a convert waiting to happen.
