Fresh New Ideas (E3 2012)
Ubisoft ended this year's E3 press conference with a bang. They showed off a trailer to their newest title, Watch Dogs. Why was it so impressive? Well, to begin with, there were not very many new major IPs from the huge game companies this year. Between the new Call of Duty, Dead Space 3, Epic Mickey 2, Assassin's Creed 3, and other games with character we've been seeing years after years, Watch Dogs was not only refreshing, but it looked great on so many other levels.

In Watch Dogs, gamers will enter a world that might remind them of the greatest cyberpunk worlds of our time. Deus Ex comes to mind, but those who took in plenty of William Gibson books should also get excited. Watch Dogs is cyberpunk to the extreme. In the near future, our main character, Aiden, will be able to hack just about anything. The world functions on one huge network, socially and mechanically. This network, called ctOS holds information on just about everyone. Aiden will be hacking into this digital pool for both information and the ability to control and manipulate things, such as traffic lights and cell phones.
Watch Dogs won't just be about hacking though. It will also be about gunfights and stealth action. The graphics are looking good, and it seems like Ubisoft is taking the time to create a really rich world for Aiden to play in. Essentially, thanks to his ability to hack, the entire city can be manipulated and controlled by his actions. By shutting off a traffic light, players can cause huge car pile-ups, so I can't wait to see what other things can and will happen. Watch Dogs reminds me of the classic John Shirley cyberpunk novel City Come A-Walkin' where the city essentially comes to life and attacks people.

Watch Dogs doesn't have an official release date yet, or even a mention of which exact platforms it will be released on, although we expect it, like most Ubisoft titles of this kind, on Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. Ubisoft is already creating a huge mystery behind this IP. A QR code that appeared in the demo led us to http://dotconnexion.ubi.com, which seemed to be a promo site related to the great-looking cyberpunk dance club within the game. We can't wait to hear more about this title as new information leaks!
