Drive to Become the Most Wanted Racer in the City
While Need for Speed: Most Wanted shares its name with another entry in EA’s popular racing series, it bears more of a resemblance to another title from developer Criterion, the 2008 open-world racer Burnout Paradise. Just like that game, next month’s Need for Speed title will set players in an open-world setting, giving them free reign to go and do whatever they please with their vehicles.
However, don’t expect Criterion to simply do what they did with Burnout under the Need for Speed label. Most Wanted will be sporting some unique features of its own that will definitely leave fans of competitive racing happy.
One of the most notable things that NFS: MW does to shake things up is none of the cars available are locked. Once players take to the streets of the city of Fairhaven, they will be able to get their hands on all of the vehicles the game has to offer. The catch is, though, that the cars are hidden all throughout the city, and only when they are found can they be driven. With a wide range of real-world vehicles ranging from street racers to muscle cars, players will be able to take on Fairhaven their way. If they want to just cruise through town in their rides, they will be able to.
However, that would be missing most of what Need for Speed: Most Wanted has to offer. All over the city players can take part in races where they can take any route they want from the starting point to the finish line, drifting and drafting around traffic at dizzying speeds, and (as should be expected from the developer of the Burnout series) wreaking havoc plowing their vehicles through fences, billboards, and other cars with the force of a wrecking ball. Not to mention, dodging police cars when vehicular shenanigans go too far.
While this will most likely make for an exciting single-player experience, it is in the multiplayer (the online modes, to be exact) where Most Wanted goes all out. With their friends with them, players will be able to engage in various challenges, like straight-up races, drift competitions, and jump challenges. Tying all of this together is an updated version of the Autolog network that Criterion introduced in 2010’s Need for Speed: Hot Pursuit.
Autolog will keep track of everything a player does whilst playing Need for Speed: Most Wanted, and it highlights their greatest accomplishments for all their friends to see, teasing them and inviting them to do one better. The service will even allow for players to target certain friends whose records need breaking, as well as adjust the game so that they can lower the presence of one friend and focus on another.
Topping off the open world and Autolog is a new feature called "Cloudcomplete". With this feature, players will be able to carry their accounts’ data from one version of Most Wanted to another, meaning that players can start earning experience on one system and then continue on another with all the progress intact.
It’s too soon to say with any certainty yet, but Need for Speed: Most Wanted is looking like a winner. All the elements, from the open world setting to the impressive social elements to the variety of things to do, heavily suggest that Criterion will knock it out of the park with this one. Plus, dodging the coppers looks like a total blast. Nuff said.
Look for Need for Speed: Most Wanted on October 30th for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, Windows PC, PlayStation Vita, and mobile devices, or November 2nd in Europe and the 1st in Australia.
