You Shall Not Pass
LEGO games all have one thing in common, a series of movie-inspired scenarios and characters reproduced as LEGO creations, moving around solving puzzles and defeating whatever gets in their way. Despite how charming these games are, there are also times when they can get repetitive and almost boring. However, LEGO The Lord of the Rings seems to breathe new life into this beloved series.

LEGO The Lord of the Rings will be the second game in the LEGO franchise to include actual spoken words. Not only that, but they will include lines directly from the Lord of the Rings trilogy; sadly the upcoming The Hobbit is missing. This was originally speculation when the teaser trailer came out, but it has since been confirmed.
This should help immerse you even more in the game, if you enjoyed the movies at all. Plus LEGO Lord of the Rings follows the films quite faithfully, so those places you thought would be awesome to see when you watched the movies, now you'll be able to visit them, albeit in a block-shaped character form.
Traveller’s Tales has stated they will tone down the humor some previous LEGO games had, and it will be much more faithful to the films. However, much like the Star Wars and Harry Potter series of LEGO games, some scenes will be slightly altered to make them family-friendly or keep some of the humor in the game.
LEGO The Lord of the Rings will have more than 80 playable characters, including several favorites such as Frodo, Gandalf, and Gimli. As in previous games, many will need to be found or unlocked by completing certain areas of the game. TT definitely was going for an authentic look with the Hobbits, as they will be barefoot, unlike the toys that recently completed that line.

Some new elements to this LEGO game will be the ability to explore all the open-world of Middle-earth. This means Helm’s Deep, The Shire, Rivendell, and many more. The open-world mode will have up to eight characters following the player with trolls randomly appearing. A blacksmith to make weapons for your characters will be around too. Travel features are new, with "fast travel", walking, running, or even the ability to purchase a vehicle (I’m not sure how that will work in Middle-earth).
Magic will once again be seen in the game thanks to Gandalf, and Gimli can be thrown at things in situations such as the Helm’s Deep battle. Also, players will jump between storylines in LEGO The Lord of the Rings. Probably the most interesting change of all is that each character has their own inventory, instead of an all-encompassing one. Even the hub has changed with LEGO blocks made of Mithril that can be forged into armor or boots to give the character better abilities, or they can be traded for high-end magical items.
Will all these changes, LEGO The Lord of the Rings looks to be the best LEGO game yet. Releasing on October 30, just in time for Halloween, on just about every platform available, it looks to be a worthwhile trip to Middle-earth.

Followdianebrunner I have been gaming since I was in high school, before it was acceptable for a girl to do it. I have been a writer for even longer. It's only natural the two would combine. I prefer RPGs, action/adventure, and strategy games, but I also play dancing, sports titles, and shooters. |
