A Piece of Art
Just from looking through screenshots and trailers, I am anxiously awaiting BADLAND, which will be out for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch on April 4th, 2013. I found myself in awe of the amazing and detailed artwork I saw in every screenshot. Full of vibrant colors and unique designs, I know I don't stand alone when I say, I can hardly wait to play this piece of artwork.
I am always intrigued by games in which you can tell the artist put a lot of effort into the scenery and sounds that bring the game to life. As you will see on the BADLAND screenshots below, the graphics are amazing and were designed to fully use the Retina Display of the newer iOS devices. You'll also love the sounds of nature, inhabitants, and the surrounding world.
BADLAND is the first title coming to us from game developer Frogmind. The developers, Johannes Vuorinen and Juhana Myllys, have been working on the game since April 2012 in their independent two-man studio in Helsinski, Finland. I recently got to chat with developer, Johannes Vuorinen, who describes the game as an "atmospheric side-scrolling action adventure." The beautiful scenery is full of unique trees, flowers and inhabitants of the land, one of which you, the player, will control to find out what is wrong with this gorgeous land.
You'll uncover creative traps and daring obstacles and puzzles as you make your way through four natural sections, each with ten levels (not a math person? I got your back... that means 40 single-player levels!). Johannes informed me that "every level basically brings something new. There's no repetition." This was music to my ears. So many games of this type become repetitious, but with BADLAND, I'm looking forward to each clever and artful level.
The four natural sections follow time: Dawn, Noon, Dusk, Night. The lands change and evolve as you complete the levels. For example, Johanne informed me that, "In the Dawn, the forest is still a rather beautiful place and birds are singing, etc... but as the Night finally arrives, the place is more like something that would rather be called BADLAND." Sounds awesome to me... I'm hooked already!
This game is fully equipped with innovative physics-based gameplay, which takes side-scrollers to the next level. Specifically designed for the iPad, iPhone, and iPod touch, it uses one-touch controls for the best and easiest possible control mechanics. It is described as an "extremely immersive audiovisual gaming experience."
Multiplayer mode is also offered, allowing up to four gamers to play with the same device. Do what you have to do to survive - it's survival of the fittest! With no rules, Johannes says "It's completely okay to push your rivals to spinning circular saws in order to survive." Being that I'm highly competetive, this sounds like the game for me. Bring it on! Or, just enjoy multiplayer for "casual" fun.
Additionally, I like that the game is a universal app which supports iCloud. This means you can have the same progress in the game on every iOS device you own. By purchasing BADLAND, you get it all; it does not contain in-app-purchases. Simple enough!
So far, BADLAND has received amazing feedback and awards, and it's considered one of the most anticipated games of 2013. I for one, am on the edge of my seat! Along with beautiful graphics and catchy sound effects and music, I am eager to see what awaits me as Night falls in BADLAND .
