In-Depth Hands-On Impressions: Back to Neverwinter
Since my initial hands-on time with Dungeon & Dragons Neverwinter at E3 2012, I have been excited about this title. Patiently awaiting the Beta, last weekend I finally got to hop into the world of Neverwinter, create a character, and experience in-depth Cryptic Studios' MMOARPG based on the Dungeon & Dragons universe.
For those who haven't been following this game, I'll give you the skinny. This Neverwinter release has no connection (aside from the shared D&D world) to the previous Neverwinter Nights game. Neverwinter is a complete new iteration of the series in the form of a free-to-play MMO. Cryptic has gone the path of ARPG rather than traditional MMO, where you'll have to not only use your skills wisely as you would in say, WoW, but also be quick to the click and fast on the keys. Doesn't sound like your cup of tea? Don't write it off just yet.
Dungeon & Dragons Neverwinter does indeed move fast; faster than any MMO I have played in recent years. With the use of heavy instances and the easy to follow paths and quests, you'll be bounding around the world, fighting slews of monsters (and massive, wicked-looking bosses), quickly progressing your skills and level, and gaining new equipment without ever feeling like you're simply grinding or meandering.
Neverwinter is ferociously quick in both questing and battling. For instance, you'll never be forced into grinding (IE: go kill 10 giant spiders and see me in the morning). Instead, your quest's goals rely on conquering big battles, artifact collecting and reaching certain NPCs or new areas. While the battles are action-based, it's not such a frustrating system where someone who is used to traditional MMOs couldn't take up the keyboard and play. I played a Cleric (the healing class) so I could do plenty of long-ranged fighting, but even when enemies got close, I could take care of business.

Three things describe Rando: Good beer, good food, and video games. On occasion, Rando flies a zeppelin through time seeking power crystals.
