A New Future for inFAMOUS
Cole McGrath had a good run. He stomped out several powerful terrorist cells, spat in the face of a number of different governmental organizations, and went head to head with the closest thing his universe has to an eldritch abomination. He was a likeable fellow, truth be told – certainly more likeable than rival series protagonist Alex Mercer by far. He's had a good run, indeed… but it seems Sucker Punch feels it's time to retire the human lightning rod, and explore a bit of new ground.
That's where inFAMOUS: Second Son's protagonist Delsin Rowe comes in, and he's got some big shoes to fill. From what we've seen so far, though? He's most definitely up to the task.
Taking place in Seattle seven years after the events of inFAMOUS 2, Second Son looks like it's going to be starting out on a rather dystopian note. See, people are understandably frightened of superhumans after what happened in both Empire City and New Marais; these events, though resolved by McGrath, created a culture of fear around the "augmented". As it's often the case in such an environment, a totalitarian organization called the Department of United Protection was created to "deal with bio-terrorism" and "defend against the superhuman threat".
It's into this rather hostile environment that Delsin Rowe stumbles. Initially, he's an arrogant – but otherwise completely unremarkable – 24 year old man who believes he's destined to do great things in the world (if only he could figure out what those things are). That belief actually turns out to be correct, but not in any remotely predictable fashion: Rowe discovers after rescuing a number of passengers from a burning bus that he's imbued with the power to manipulate and direct fire and even transform into smoke.
Naturally, the DUP doesn't much care for his newfound abilities. Delsin, who's never been terribly fond of taking orders from anyone, doesn't much care for the DUP. You all know what's coming next.
At the moment, we don't know a great deal about the plot of inFAMOUS: Second Son, nor do we know much about Delsin's abilities. What we do know is that they're eerily similar to the powers of both Nix and The Beast from inFAMOUS 2: in the trailer (which was confirmed to include gameplay footage), he hurls fireballs, attacks with a superheated chain, and even travels about by turning into smoke. How this will impact gameplay is yet to be determined, but I'd expect we may be seeing some form of fast travel system.
With a new protagonist, a new setting, and a whole host of new powers and mechanics, Second Son is shaping up to be a worthy entry into the inFAMOUS franchise. It'll be available sometime late 2013 or early 2014, after the launch of the PlayStation 4.
