No Trolling Allowed
With Trolls vs. Vikings, Norwegian indie startup Megapop aren't looking to reinvent the wheel, but rather they are setting out to perfect it. The debut release from the company (which was founded by former developers from Funcom and Artplant) is a strategic tower defense game for mobile platforms as well as PC. Taking the basic game mechanic of similar strategy games (the most obvious source being Plants vs. Zombies), Trolls vs. Vikings hopes to create a more cohesive world and cogent narrative within a familiar structure.
Heavily influenced by Norse mythology, Trolls vs. Vikings wants to be a tower defense game with a consistent world, creative narrative and appropriate attacks and powers. The player must defend a tribe of reputably ferocious but really just misunderstood trolls who are being assailed by Viking raiders, intent on stealing the trolls' hoard of gold. Characters, abilities, items, and bosses will all be drawn from Nordic stories and symbols.
While the basic mechanic is something that a lot of mobile gamers will be very familiar with, Trolls vs. Vikings hopes to differentiate itself through it's consistent aesthetic and narrative depth. The trolls will defend their homeland from Viking raiders through an extensive story mode that includes multiple seasons, and as time passes, different strategies, abilities, items, and tactics will come into play. The game will also include features like dynamic tiles, moving towers and other set pieces, resource gathering, and constantly evolving environments. Boss fights are also an important part of the narrative, with boss characters also pulled from Norse mythology, like the trickster Loki and thunder god Odin.
One of the major steps forward for the tower defense genre that Trolls vs. Vikings hopes to make involves social gaming, including both real-time and turn-based multiplayer modes. There is also going to be a strong social aspect to the game, allowing players to compare progress and share gaming milestones.
Trolls vs. Vikings will be released on iOS in December 2013, with Android and browser versions following shortly.
