Updating, Adding, and Refining (E3 2014 Preview)
Persona 4 Arena was an interesting title: taking an RPG and turning it into a fighting game seemed like a spin-off best saved for the 90s. Amazingly, P4A ended up a very solid, and powerful title. Persona 4 Arena Ultimax is a sequel to the original, which we got to get our hands on at E3 2014.
Fans of the original Persona 4 Arena probably want to know what’s new in Ultimax. The biggest addition are the five new characters which will be familiar to Persona and Arena fans. The second biggest (and the most impactful on gameplay) is the S-Hold system. The S-Hold essentially lets you power up attacks by holding down buttons longer. This is a satisfying, breath holding sort of excitement that one can only really understand when you’re in the heat of a match. This one element adds a whole new feeling to Arena. That being said, most of Ultimax feels, and looks, the same its predecessor. Ultimax feels less like a sequel and more or less a definitive ‘final cut’ version of the original.
The card system has also been tweaked, allowing for a more balanced and challenging Persona fight. Along with this, a shadow system has been instituted where players can choose a shadow version of every fighter available. These shadow fighters are almost like completely new fighters, so this essentially adds a whole new roster of characters to play.
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax remains to be an very solid and unique fighting game. Its brilliantly designed, focusing on creating complex fights and combos from a fairly simple control scheme. It’s beautifully executed in full anime, 2D glory, and is even a lot of fun for RPG fans of the Persona series to try. Persona 4 Arena Ultimax proves there is room for fresh-feeling fighters on the market.
The current relase date for Persona 4 Arena Ultimax will be August 28th in North America.
