A Wild New Direction for a Ghost
Ghost Recon: Wildlands has the most interesting title in the Tom Clancy series yet, at least from my casual experiences with the series. Taking the tactical, methodical gameplay of the Ghost Recon series and setting it in an open world the gamble being taken here could pay off in spades or we could see the series get lost in the sea off open world titles.
Set in the future in Bolivia, Wildlands puts the player in a 4 player squad as they set to interrupt operation in the world's current largest cocaine distributor. The game is totally unlinear when compared to other entries, and missions can be completed in a number of ways. There was a vast amount of gadgets available to complete missions and it was just insane to see how the team of 4 was using all of them to get different angles to complete the goal. The craziest and most over the top strategy I saw was Player 1 and 2 taking an informant from a complex by stuffing him in a car trunk to protect him, the car was driven to a salt land field where a helicopter was waiting and Players 3 and 4 took him away.
Aside from the number of way a mission can be completed, the scale of the world is fairly massive. A look down from a helicopter will let the player see battles between rebels and the cartels, which can be joined by the player to slowly free the country. While its huge and is the biggest world in an Ubisoft title yet, whether or not the large mountains represent the end of the game world remains to be seen. Also, while I don't deal drugs or anything, I find it hard to believe that there weren't any makeshift strongholds in the middle of the vast stretches of land seen in the desert.
The graphics looked great, and reminded me of how mind blowing Splinter Cell looked in 2002 on the first Xbox. While Ghost Recon: Wildlands doesn't have a release date and there are numerous other features that have yet to be announced, it’s already looking like a pretty strong entry in the series. The open-ended nature of the game looks like it will expand the audience of the series, while satisfying long-time players.
