A Turbo Trial!
With Driveclub, Forza, Gran Turismo and Need for Speed taking the serious racing game genre by the neck and leaving no space for new competitors, Ubisoft has expanded the Trackmania series to the Xbox One and PS4. Trackmania Turbo takes the feel of a 90s arcade racer and adds the respawn button from Trials to ease frustration from attempting to beat track times.
Trackmania Turbo has about 200 tracks divided between 4 modes, with four kinds of environments and can interestingly be played with one player or two players taking the helm of the car. The racing was solid, although from what I played there was no emphasis on the cars, which was surprising considering the arcadey nature of the game's menus and display. I mean I at least want to be able to change the color of the car.
Another defining feature of Trackmania Turbo will be its track editor. Similar to the one in the Trials series, players can create a track from scratch or randomly generate one. It will remain to be seen if the editor is as expansive as the one in the Trials series, where players have been able to change the genre of the game from Racing to First Person Shooter; or if it will just be a simple editor. Regardless, creations with the editor are able to be uploaded for others to download.
I was pretty surprised by how fun the racing was, and I was glad the reset button was there to start me off at the last checkpoint instead of starting the race. The game reminds me of the Trials games a lot, with the difficulty of some of the tracks and heavy physics manipulation. However, the reset button sets the player back to the last checkpoint at the time they were at when they passed it; making it a tool to help players fix mistakes and trim down lap times.
Everything about Trackmania Turbo seems really polished, but with the show floor being so loud I wasn't able to really hear the dynamic soundtrack. If the soundtrack is on par with the Sega, Namco, and Midway racers from 90s arcades we will have the perfect tribute to those titles on December 1st.
