Among other reveals at Namco’s Level Up event in Dubai yesterday, the publisher officially announced SoulCalibur V for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. In terms of setting, the game will be a continuation of SoulCalibur IV, taking place roughly 17 years later.

According to IGN, the focus of the story will be shifting this time around from Siegfried to the son of Sophitia, a character named Patroklos. Namco is promising improved visuals and a new fighting system that is “lighter, sharper, and more elegant.”

When speaking to Eurogamer, Project Soul producer Hisaharu Tago said, “There is quite some change in the gameplay from SCIV. The pace of the game has been improved, and the combos will be easier to perform, and the moves will be easier to pull out.”

No specific release date was mentioned, but fans of the fighting franchise can expect to see SoulCalibur V sometime in 2012.
