PopCap Games Acquired by Electronic Arts for More than $1 Billion?

AOL technology blog, TechCrunch, reported yesterday afternoon that several sources have confirmed that PopCap Games, legendary indie developer of casual games such as Bejeweled and Plants vs. Zombies, is in the process of being acquired by for over USD $1 billion.

When the article was initially posted, TechCrunch had no solid information on who the potential suitor would be, offering suggestions such as Zynga, EA, and Tencent.

As it turns out, Electronic Arts is now being pegged as the likely candidate for the pick up, even though such a large payout seems to be a bit more than the software giant can chew.

That being said, Electronic Arts has been eager to corner the casual and mobile gaming markets, acquiring PlayFish last year for USD $400 million, and creating in-house publishing / development studios such as EA Play and EA Mobile.
