PopCap Zombies Explain EA Takeover

NEWS | ? Comments |

Author: GD Staff

Initially it was reported that Electronic Arts was seeking to pick up indie game developer PopCap Games for USD $1 billion. As it turns out, EA recently acquired the Washington-based studio for USD $650 million in cash and another $100 million in EA shares.

PopCap made a name for itself initially with its mega-puzzle titles Bejeweled and Peggle, though they have since created casual hit after casual hit, including Bookworm, Plants vs. Zombies, and many more.

While EA has already created studios/publishers such as EA Play and EA Mobile to handle portions of the casual market, the gaming giant obviously felt that PopCap Games was going to give the company instant access to expertise, resources, name recognition, and market share in order to dominate the rapidly expanding gaming space.

The folks over at PopCap celebrated the acquisition with the following, lighthearted memo, which will hopefully help to smooth over a bit of the outcry from long-time PopCap fans:

PopCap Games and Electronic Arts (EA) merger finalized (PC, PS3, Xbox 360, Mobile, iOS, Android, Wii, DS, DSi, 3DS)
