UPDATE:
Nintendo contacted us to clarify information found in the original press release that may be confusing to consumers. Here's what Nintendo had to say concerning the misleading wording:
"PokéPark 2 and Mario Party 9 will be coming out for the Wii this quarter, but there will not be a 3DS game from either franchise."
You will also find minor edits to the final paragraph of our original story to reflect the clarification. Thanks Big N for the heads up! ; )
ORIGINAL STORY:
Nintendo announced today via a press release that the 3DS has sold through more than 4 million units during its first 9 months at North American retail, making it a stronger performer than even Wii's touted launch numbers.
According to Nintendo, 3DS sales were fueled by strong performing software titles, with Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land each selling through over a million copies in the United States.
The 3DS wasn't the only impressive seller for Nintendo, as Wii still managed to shift 4.5 million consoles in North America in 2011. Of course, the latest entry in the Zelda series helped, as The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword "became the 45th Wii title to sell more than 1 million units in the United States".
In all, "Nintendo sold more than 12 million total hardware units in the United States in 2011, marking the fifth year in a row that the company has accomplished that feat. This includes more than 4.5 million units of Wii, more than 4 million Nintendo 3DS systems, and more than 3.4 million units of the Nintendo DS™ family of systems. This brings the installed base for Wii and Nintendo DS to 39 million and more than 51 million, respectively."
Nintendo also wanted to remind everyone that quality handheld titles [and console software] will continue to keep the 3DS [Nintendo sales across all platforms] chugging along at a furious clip, as "new installments in the Mario Party, Pokémon and Kid Icarus franchises" are on the horizon, as well as third-party games including Capcom's Resident Evil Revelations and Konami's Metal Gear Solid 3D Snake Eater.
