Resident Evil 5 wasn't the next-gen horror game we wanted as longtime fans of the Resident Evil series. It looked great, but it lacked what many other games brought to the table: a helpless sense of horror in the face of a tremendous outbreak. The new trailer for Resident Evil 6 looks like it may finally acknowledge this issue.

After the cold opening showing an older, more mature Leon Kennedy, we're treated to what seems to be a glorious return to the roots of the series: the walking dead. This RE6 trailer seems to be indicating a few things about the upcoming game.
1. There will be two, possibly three, protagonists playing through their own stories in separate parts of the world. The two identifiable characters, Leon S. Kennedy and Chris Redfield, are finally sharing the spotlight in a game. It seems like Leon will have a more solo-based story which harkens back to the older days of Resident Evil with one character alone against a massive outbreak in a ruined city. Chris' story still seems to be more action-oriented, with a bioterror outbreak in China.
2. The partner system may still be heavily intact. Leon is constantly seen conversing with a mysterious woman who claims responsibility for the new outbreak, which resembles the initial outbreak in Raccoon City where Leon worked as a one-day officer. Chris also seems to be moving in a large group of B.S.A.A. operatives fighting against the work of a new group of bioterrorists. The creatures bear a strong resemblance to Las Plagas from RE4, with mutating, exploding limbs and strong regenerative capabilities.
3. There seems to be a third potential protagonist who possesses some blood-based immunity to the spreading infection and opts to fight hand to hand instead of using the traditional firearms. Personally, I find him slightly reminiscent of long time series antagonist Wesker, who finally met his end in RE5. The new character also has a partner in tow, which furthers the potential of the partner system.
4. It looks like a new Nemesis type is pursuing the new protagonist endlessly during his portions of the game. The new hulking tyrant bears little resemblance to previous Nemesis forms, and he's even equipped with a high-tech right arm featuring some extra appendages. From the trailer, we can also see that this new "Nemesis" is quite speedy and rather relentless. You won't be getting away from him by closing a few doors.
It looks like, hopefully, Resident Evil 6 will take the well-rooted, isolation-based horror of early games and mix it cleanly with the more action- oriented style of play, which has dominated the series for a few years now. Hopefully, with multiple protagonists, they can fully indulge in both styles of play without any compromise or sacrifice on either end.
