Pause. Before you fly down to the comments section, hear me out. I'm not saying that the Modern Warfare series should meet its end. I'm simply here to question whether or not a new game is necessary so soon.

Here are my reasons:
1. Lack of Campaign Depth
With the tremendous upsurge in multiplayer, the campaign for many FPS games has frequently been relegated to the back seat. Even Battlefield 3 packaged its multiplayer first in the game case, instead of the single player. Is this a bad thing? Not at all, it's a new dimension of gaming which has reached new levels of popularity. However, look at games like Mass Effect or Gears of War. They delivered additional story content via DLC and those who wanted it, bought it. If the developers recognize that the multiplayer is the attraction, maybe they can offer the largely set-piece based campaign as DLC instead of an afterthought on a separate disc?
2. Few Multiplayer "Changes"
Don't get me wrong, here. Shooting people in CoD 4 and shooting them in COD: Black Ops WAS different…visually. Granted, there have been reworks, tweaks, upgrades, and patches for the Call of Duty multiplayer, but the core experience has remained the same. A rifle in Black Ops wasn't different because of the time period so much as it was different by design. From what I've seen and played, the biggest differences between the multiple Modern Warfare multiplayer games were the maps and how the guns looked. Again, this could be offered through downloads. If people liked World at War maps and guns more than Black Ops or MW3 maps and guns, you could still please those people instead of forcing them to switch from disc to disc to play where they want to play.

3. Where Do We Go From Here?
Call it my lack of creativity, but I really don't see what the Modern Warfare series has left to explore. We've been in the past, the present, and I suppose logic would dictate that we go to the future next. But that's all been explored by other games pretty sufficiently. It could work; I just don't see how they could craft anything other than an inflated campaign filled with new set pieces like a space station crashing into a planet (admittedly, that would be cool to look at). Bigger isn't always better, and even if the locale changed, the multiplayer can't change too drastically for fear of alienating their audience. Essentially, the Modern Warfare series has backed itself into a metaphorical corner, and that's really ok. They can still provide the experience without really needing to leap too far away from familiarity. Just look at games like World of Warcraft. All they've done is add new toys to play with while keeping the core game essentially the same. It's not a bad thing, it's just catering to what the players want from their game.
Maybe the next Modern Warfare is inevitable (it is) and maybe they'll surprise me. But for now, I don't think we really need another Modern Warfare game. Or do we? Now it's your chance to tell us your thoughts.
