Microsoft to axe Zune and Windows LIVE brands with Windows 8

There's a rebranding in the future for Microsoft's Zune and Windows LIVE brands if reports are accurate.

According to The Verge, Microsoft is planning on axing Zune when Windows 8 comes out, replacing it with "Xbox LIVE for Windows." In addition, its Windows LIVE applications will now be bundled in a pack known as "Windows Communications," while all pre-installed apps and a user's "Windows LIVE ID" will become part of their "Microsoft Account."

Microsoft rebranding Zune and Windows LIVE with Windows 8

Though the Zune Pass is still going to be a part of the whole deal, Microsoft is effectively killing off the brand, even if they're doing it in name only. Truth be told, this just seems to be the next step in the death of Zune, a failure of Microsoft's and the absorption of the music service into the Xbox brand–one of Microsoft's greater successes.

This rebranding will begin this coming Wednesday in Barcelona, when Microsoft unveils the Consumer Preview version of Windows 8.
