Whole Foods working on Kinect-powered smart shopping cart

TECH & GADGETS | ? Comments |

I bet you didn't think Kinect, for all its potential beyond a video game peripheral, would ever be used to power, of all things, a shopping cart. Well that's what Whole Foods plans on doing in their search for the "shopping cart of the future".

Microsoft yesterday showed off an early prototype of the cart, which is being developed for Whole Foods by Austin-based Chaotic Moon. Using Kinect, the cart can not only recognize the food you put in it, but it also automatically checks them off your list. Probably the most noticeable feature is that the cart can follow you around the store.

The project is currently only weeks old, but Microsoft thinks that the kinks will be ironed out before the Kinect carts are unleashed upon us all.

Here's a video of the Kinect cart in action, courtesy of Geekwire. Enjoy.
