Sony reveals details for God of War: Ascension's multiplayer mode and single-player campaign
Today, God of War fans can get their first look at the series' highly-anticipated new installment, God of War: Ascension. Only, it's not really the first look I think anyone was expecting.
At a recent preview event in Hollywood, Todd Papy, the game's director, took to the stage with a demonstration before the eyes of eager journalists and press reporters. But what started with footage of Kratos soon revealed itself to be footage of something else entirely: the game's multiplayer mode.
According to what was revealed at the event, the mode that was shown off is known as Execution. It is made of full-on arena battles between two teams of four, who will be able to fight and kill with the dramatic brutality that has become a hallmark of past God of War games. Not only will they be able to use their weapons, but players will also have the option to deploy traps to further brutalize the competition.
Outside of fighting, players will be able to level up their warrior and choose a god to worship. Depending on which god you align yourself with (you can pick Zeus, Poseidon, Ares, or Hades), you will receive unique perks and special abilities for you character. And as you win battles and rise in the ranks, you will gain even more abilities and items, such as customized armor sets.
Currently, Sony Santa Monica is planning on including seven multiplayer maps (five large and unique environments, and two smaller arenas). Included features will include the ability to slightly alter the mainly fixed camera, but split-screen support and drop-in/drop-out play will not be among them. The number of modes will also be limited, as the developers have said they're more concerned with producing a high-quality experience than providing a large number of modes.
Additionally, despite what was shown during the demonstration, Kratos will not be playable in the multiplayer. My condolences to those who are bummed to hear that.
While the God of War: Ascension multiplayer event provided no details on single-player, we didn't have to wait too long at all for dirt on the single-player campaign.
Thanks to IGN, we now know have the info that most were longing for. According to Sony, "God of War: Ascension is a prequel that will show Kratos' emotional path of redemption, while detailing the rise of his rage to break free from Ares' bond." But then, again, most of that had been assumed already.
That's not all, though, as Sony had more to reveal. "Six months after being tricked into killing his wife and child, a younger Kratos is sentenced to a life of madness with the Furies, caged in a titan sized prison for the living damned. Fighting insanity, his will is tested to the limit as he seeks to break his bond and gain the clarity to seek revenge on Ares for his part in the death of his family. Armed with double-chained blades, Kratos must take on mythology's darkest creatures while solving intricate puzzles throughout his merciless quest for redemption."
This should be satisfactory information for those who were disappointed that all that Sony talked about before was the multiplayer.
