Company of Heroes 2 officially announced; first details and screenshot inside
Late last week, it came to the world's attention that Relic Entertainment and THQ were prepping a true sequel to Company of Heroes. Today, an official press release was sent out to confirm a few important initial details, as well as give us the logo and COH2's first screenshot.
As we already knew, Company of Heroes 2 will be set on Nazi Germany's Eastern Front with the Soviet forces. Taking up the Red Army's fight, players will have to take advantage of the terrain and the weather in order to push back the Nazi invasion of Russia.
Set in 1941, at the very beginning of Germany's Operation Barbarossa, players will benefit from the implementation of new technology and refined gameplay mechanics in this state-of-the-art RTS. Powered by Relic's new Essence 3.0 Engine, Company of Heroes 2 packs "incredible graphic fidelity."
Essence 3.0 has allowed the development team to introduce the new TrueSight system, which revolutionizes fog of war on the virtual battlefield. According to Relic, "fog of war is no longer a guessing game as unit visibility on the battlefield relies on true and proper line of sight."
As far as gameplay, the original's tight controls and pacing will be maintained yet improved upon through what's being called "Dynamic Battle Tactics." Unfortunately, no hard details about what has been changed were given. We do know, however, that specific commanding units will be able to use "Commander Abilities;" these sound like special buffs that can be improved over time to give surrounding units a tactical advantage.
Finally, Relic and THQ assure everyone that this is a huge game with multiple cooperative and competitive online modes that complement the campaign in Company of Heroes 2.
