MTV Games Puts Harmonix up for Sale
Viacom, the parent of publisher MTV Games, has decided to put Harmonix (Rock Band, Dance Central) up for sale.
The news broke this morning in a report from the Associated Press featured in the Boston Herald. According to the report, Viacom has decided to sell off Harmonix because it has been a consistent drag on the company's earnings for the last several quarters, "as shoppers continue to avoid big discretionary buys."
IGN's Jim Reilly followed up with MTV Games and learned that, despite Viacom's insistence on selling the holding, Harmonix will continue to support all of their products throughout the sales process.
The article also pointed out, citing Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter, that "the buyer is either Activision or EA, with Activision having more to gain by absorbing a key competitor."
