E3 2012: Electronic Arts Press Conference Highlights, Images, and Videos
With a lot of their line-up pretty much known through the rumor mill, it was hard to be surprised by EA's pre-E3 press conference. The things shown that did surprise were smaller things, such as a new Facebook game by Maxis, and the announcement of an alliance in the world of sports.
Dead Space 3 started off the show, and takes the series in a bold new direction, featuring wide open spaces and drop-in/drop-out co-op. The gameplay shown confirms the game's setting in an icy planet with gigantic monsters assisted by swarms of enemies. Weapons were shown to have different functions, with one freezing a huge enemy long enough to attack it. The title releases in February 2013.
Madden NFL 13 features connected careers, an experience that takes Madden's created players beyond the game. Players are able to take their created player’s careers to their PC and tablet when they’re away from their console. EA calls it the “next generation of Madden, today.”
Maxis announced SimCity social for Facebook, putting the series on the same platform as its imitators. The title will launch in a few weeks as Maxis boldly claims it’s the best city-building experience you will find on Facebook. Afterwards a video of SimCity (2013) was shown, and revealed to have multiplayer, which consists of a series of challenges for players to accomplish in a set amount of time, such as building an Airport. SimCity will release in 2013.
Battlefield 3 premium was announced formally, giving deeper options to players such as more camos options, tags and 2-week early access to the game’s 5 expansion packs. Priced at $49.99, the pack is available now for PS3, Xbox 360 and PC.
Star Wars: The Old Republic was then the focus as Dr.Ray Muzkya took the stage and detailed the game’s success. He then announces that starting in July, the game will be made free for everyone, up until level 15. In addition, the title is set to receive a content update with new abilities and an increased level cap.
Then they showed Medal of Honor: Warfighter; it was a gameplay demo that takes place in Somalia. There is a tool system that lets the player decide how they want to handle a given situation, such as deciding between a tomahawk or a shotgun to open a door. The campaign offers situations set around the world, with 12 different playable armed forces throughout its duration.
EA Sports Football Club was featured, being touted as “the heartbeat of FIFA”. As part of the initiative, multiple apps and programs will come together to create on cohesive experience. An example of this is progress from the previous season of progress from an iOS app carrying over to the next years’ experience.
EA surprised everyone by taking the UFC license for a multi-year deal. Ending years of snide remarks at one another, the announcement brings the fastest growing sport back to EA's stable of sports titles. UFC president Dana White seemed pretty ecstatic to finally be with EA games, with no game or game footage being announced.
Need for Speed: Most Wanted was also shown and confirmed to be from Criterion. The October 30th, 2012 release uses the auto log system from previous need for speed titles, and it continues the marriage of Burnout's gameplay with the Need for Speed series as racers and cops battles on and off road.
The show closed out with Crysis 3, which looked amazing, with top-notch graphics and fast gameplay, a great way to complete a presentation from the world’s top sports game producer.
