Old Republic going free to play to level 15 in July; new content inbound
Not surprisingly, we also had Bioware’s Dr. Ray Muzyka in attendance at E3’s keynote. Sadly, we still didn’t receive any news on Mass Effect 3’s Extended Cut DLC. Still, he had a few interesting announcements to make about EA/Bioware’s Star Wars MMORPG, The Old Republic.
First and foremost, this July, TOR will be free to play for everybody up to level 15, a practice that’s becoming more and more common in the MMORPG universe as subscription rates wane and users get bored of the grind. They’re also going to be making some pretty significant changes to the core game over the next several months, including new PVP warzones, new versions of Hardcore and Nightmare for TOR vets, increased level caps, character transfer capabilities, increased level caps, combat abilities, and talents, ranked PVP, and a new group finder utility.

There’ll also be a torrent of new content. A new companion, the HK-51 Assassin Droid will be available. The Catlike Cathar will be a playable species. A new Operation, The Terror from Beyond, will pit players against a terrifying, otherworldly abomination the size of a spaceship, and there’ll be a new Space Mission called Space Station Assault (it’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like). Finally, the inclusion of a new planet, Makeb(presumably more endgame content coinciding with the increased level cap) will find players exploring a hostile world with strong ties to the Hutt Cartel, while a new warzone, Ancient Hypergates, will provide a new locale for cross-faction combat.
You’ll have more details as soon as we do. For now, you can have a look at the video below.
