League of Legends hacked; passwords, e-mails, and dates of birth seized by Internet thieves

NEWS | ? Comments |

Author: Peter Grimm

Bad news for players of Riot Games' online RTS League of Legends. On Friday, it had been discovered that a serious security breach had occurred, enabling the hackers responsible to access player account information.

After thorough investigation, Riot found that no payment or billing info was hacked. Just as unsettling, though, was that the hackers had gained access to personal data in a number of the game's EU West and EU Nordic & East databases.

Such data included e-mail addresses, encrypted account passwords, summoner names, and date of birth. And for a small group of players, their first and last names, as well as their security question and answer, were broken into. Only a small number of players were affected by the breach, but with data that personal accessible to the hackers, it was troublesome, nevertheless.

Since then, Riot has fixed the security issue that the hackers used to break in, and has been notifying all players in the affected databases via e-mail. They are continuing to investigate the matter, going so far as to hire experts to help them understand why someone would try to hack into their databases, and what they could do to prevent it in the future.

They also advise that players immediately change their passwords, which they can do at this page here. It is also advised that if they use the same passwords for accounts on different services, they should change those too.
