Developers Slant Six Studios and Silicon Knights hit by layoffs
It's an unfortunate thing reporting layoffs at a video game studio. Even more so when reporting on two at the same time.
First off is news of Slant Six Studios, developer of the rather successful (though critically panned) Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City, who let go 26 of its 96 employees with the option of either a severance package or a temporary layoff while Slant Six looks for new projects.
Those who chose temporary layoffs (which were most of the 26 employees) will be able to have their benefits and collect employment insurance. This will only be in effect for 13 weeks, and if the studio is unable to take them back by then, the layoffs will become permanent.
"Regretfully, we can confirm that there have been some temporary layoffs at our studio," so goes the company's official statement. "We must stress that these are temporary layoffs, which means we are working very hard on new business prospects so we can reinstate every single person affected. As an independent and close-knit studio it is a very difficult but necessary business measure due to the current project cycle demands."
As I said before, Slant Six isn't the only studio suffering layoffs. It has also been discovered that Silicon Knights has laid off a small number of its staff. According to founder and president Denis Dyack, the developer is "scaling back to a core group and focusing all our efforts on future opportunities."
It is currently uncertain how many employees were laid off.
Dyack also took the time to address a NeoGAF rumor that said that Nintendo had cancelled the rumored sequel to Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem, after SK had to fork over $4.5 million to Epic Games after their legal spat. "As to the rumor about Nintendo," he said, "it is not true and has no basis in fact." Whether or not this is a veiled confirmation of Eternal Darkness 2's existence remains to be seen.
