NeoGeo X Gold entertainment system priced and dated for worldwide distribution

NEWS | ? Comments |

Author: Peter Grimm

You guys may recall an article that appeared on this site back in January, regarding a new portable version of SNK's Neo Geo. After a lack of news for months, SNK Playmore and partner Tommo, Inc. have dropped a good deal of it, starting with the official name for the device: NeoGeo X Gold.

Featuring "all of the features of a home arcade and the convenience of a handheld gaming device", the NeoGeo X Gold itself sports such features a 4.3" LCD display, an expandable game card slot, internal stereo speakers, and a headphone jack. The device is also compatible with the NeoGeo X Joystick and NeoGeo X Station, which will allow it to charge and transfer the action on the screen to a TV via HDMI or A/V out, giving players a chance to have a more arcade-y experience at home.

All those features, though, would be for naught without games. Luckily, a lack of games won't be a problem for the NeoGeo X Gold, since it will come pre-loaded with 20 (I repeat, 20) whole classic titles from the NeoGeo library.

Here's a list of all of the 20 games this baby's packing:
3 COUNT BOUT
LEAGUE BOWLING
ART OF FIGHTING II
MAGICIAN LORD
ALPHA MISSION II
METAL SLUG
BASEBALL STARS II
MUTATION NATION
CYBER LIP
NAM 1975
FATAL FURY
PUZZLED
FATAL FURY SPECIAL
REAL BOUT - FATAL FURY SPECIAL
THE KING OF FIGHTERS '95
SAMURAI SHODOWN II
KING OF THE MONSTERS
SUPER SIDEKICKS
LAST RESORT
WORLD HEROES PERFECT

"Great game consoles don't die; they're just reborn in much more affordable and convenient packages," Jonathan Wan, CEO of Tommo, Inc. "The NeoGeo X Gold is a love letter to one of my favorite consoles of all time, and working with SNK Playmore to acquire the NeoGeo license, Tommo Inc. looks to provide gaming and entertainment enthusiasts with a classic arcade experience both at home and on the go."

The NeoGeo X Gold is slated to be released worldwide on December 6 for $199.99. That seems slightly steep for a handheld with only 20 games, if you ask me, but then again, that's more games than one usually has with any one handheld. And who knows, this may be a hit with those inflicted with NeoGeo nostalgia.

Does the NeoGeo X Gold sound intriguing to you? If so, let us know.
