Insomniac's Overstrike is now Fuse; will be released early next year

It's been a good long while since we last heard anything about Insomniac Games' cross-platform action title Overstrike. Recently, though, the silence was being broken by rumors of the game being rebranded. Today, those rumors were confirmed.

Indeed, Overstrike has been reworked and is now going by a new name: Fuse. Moving away from the semi-stealth-based gameplay that Insomniac was going with before, the game now focuses more on downright action-packed, third-person gameplay between up to four players.

The plot too has been revamped, revolving around an alien energy substance known as Fuse, and the Overstrike team's mission to get it back from a terrorist organization called Raven. Fuse (the alien energy, not the game) factors into the gameplay as well, allowing players to combine their weapons with Fuse to create all new, super-powered weapons that will allow them to create mini-black holes and crystalize opponents and so on (it's Insomniac, so expect the weapons to be quite creative).

Fuse (the game this time) will also feature an upgrade system with which players can earn points by taking out enemies, allowing them to upgrade weapons and character abilities. Working with friends and landing kills together will result in more points, which will come in handy in the game's campaign and beyond.

Fuse is unique among Insomniac's games in that it will be the first game from the developer to release on a non-Sony console. Speaking with Joystiq, CEO Ted Price revealed that they made quite the effort to bring the game to the Xbox 360. Despite the expansion onto another system, Price assured that Insomniac will not "abandon" its history with Sony.

Price went on to say that both the X360 and PS3 versions of the game will run identically to one another. Also, he stated that it's not entirely out of the question to see sequels to Fuse on next-generation consoles.

Insomniac will release Fuse sometime in March 2013. Until then, have a look at the bevy of new screenshots. A new trailer will be released soon, Price revealed on Insomniac's website, so you can look forward to that as well.
