Preview Guide: Top Video Games to Look Forward to in 2013

The world didn't end with the Mayan Apocalypse (as expected), so it's the new year! As always, the new year brings with it many things: parties we'll never remember, New Year's resolutions we'll never keep, and a whole list of new games we simply can't wait to play.

There's a lot to look forward to, but here are some of the biggest releases coming this year. For now, we'll focus primarily on the first two quarters. After all, not every upcoming game has a release date yet.

January 2013

Preview Guide: Top Video Games to Look Forward to in 2013

Admittedly, there aren't a great many titles releasing in January. It's understandable, I suppose: after all, it's just after Christmas. Still, there are a few excellent titles to look forward to, depending on your tastes. These include Anarchy Reigns, Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2, and DmC: Devil May Cry. Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch and First of the North Star: Ken's Rage 2 are also slated for release this month.

Anarchy Reigns (January 8, 2013)

An over-the-top, fast-paced, multiplayer brawler in the spirit of games like God Hand or Mad World; Anarchy Reigns is both wildly entertaining and thoroughly accessible. See, too many fighting games decide that battles should simply be 1v1 affairs. Developer PlatinumGames threw that tradition straight out the window with awesome results.

The game includes a number of different multiplayer modes, including battle Royale, Survival, Capture the Flag, and Deathmatch; and all the characters are both extravagant and colorful. The whole affair looks absolutely ridiculous - in a good way.

Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2 (January 15, 2013)

If you were to believe everything Namco Bandai's been saying about Sniper: Ghost Warrior 2, this game is going to absolutely blow away everyone who's ever been a fan of first person shooters (and probably even a few people who aren't). The developer obviously intends to one-up pretty much every big name in the industry: everything from game design to A.I., to weaponry is billed as bigger and better.

While it's fairly likely to fall far short of those lofty goals (games rarely, if ever, live up to such hype), it's still likely to include a number of considerable improvements over the original, as any sequel should.

DmC: Devil May Cry (January 15, 2013)

Although Devil May Cry is likely one of Capcom's best-known franchises, you won't find many people arguing that the series didn't require a reboot. Dante, originally something of a smartmouth, came down with a terrible cast of angst; as a result, the series simply didn't have the same "kick" that it used to.

To Capcom's credit, if the demo is any indicationDmC: Devil May Cry is a hell of a lot of fun (pun intended). The title features a complete remake of both Dante and Virgil, a number of cool new skills for Dante, and a whole new setting. The plot might not be to everybody's taste, but the gameplay is good, at least.

Painkiller Hell & Damnation (January 22, 2013)

Preview Guide: Top Video Games to Look Forward to in 2013

January's release schedule is rounded out by another remake, this time of the immensely popular arena shooter Painkiller. The gameplay's pretty much what one would expect: Mercifully, Nordic Games hasn't changed much about the core engine. Instead, they've given it a graphical update, added a number of awesome new weapons, and brought in several multiplayer modes, including Survival, Deathmatch, Capture The Flag, Duel, and Co-Op.

Not bad for a remake: fans of the original should definitely mark this one down.

February 2013

Preview Guide: Top Video Games to Look Forward to in 2013

February brings us a positively massive array of games to choose from; all of them incredible. MMO fanatics will find a lot to love about Age of Wushu, while Bioshock: Infinite is, for many, the most anticipated title of 2013. There's also Dead Space 3, Crysis 3, and Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance to round out the list of blockbusters. Omerta: City of Gangsters is also scheduled to hit shelves in February.

Age of Wushu (February 1, 2013)

Preview Guide: Top Video Games to Look Forward to in 2013

Age of Wushu could well usher in a new era of MMO. The free-to-play title has a lot to love about it. The design of both the characters and environment is downright beautiful; the emphasis on player community and economy makes the game-world feel positively like-like, and the unique, class-less and level-less character progression system sets it apart from other MMOs.

Combat looks pretty awesome too, as does the fact that your characters remain in-game as NPCs when you log out. Basically, this game's going to be awesome, and it's all for the low price of nothing.
