Nintendo announces Pokémon X and Y for 3DS; worldwide release date set for October 2013
Those who predicted today's Nintendo Direct video presentation would reveal new entries in main Pokémon series were right on the money. This morning, Big N chief Satoru Iwata unveiled the next generation of Pokémon games, Pokémon X and Pokémon Y*, and announced that it will be coming to 3DSs around the world this October, a first for a series that has usually taken its time releasing outside Japan.
Pokémon X and Y looks to refine the Pokémon experience that fans have fallen in love with for over fifteen years even further, with enhanced visuals, new Pokémon, new story, and "dynamic battles" that make the games "two of the most highly anticipated video game titles of 2013". Additionally, according to Nintendo, X and Y will form the basis for a new generation of cartoons, trading cards, toys and other merchandise around the world.
"The worldwide launch of Pokémon X and Pokémon Y this October allows players to begin their adventures at the same time," said Tsunekazu Ishihara, CEO of The Pokémon Company. "Now, Pokémon fans across the globe can discover the secrets of Pokémon games and can collect, battle, and trade with each other immediately."
"We brought Pokémon into an entirely new dimension and we're incredibly excited to bring Pokémon X and Pokémon Y to fans," said Junichi Masuda, game director at GameFreak. "The stunning visuals, a completely redesigned environment, game scenario, music, and communication features will bring smiles to the faces of video game players around the world."
You can get your first glimpse at Pokémon X and Pokémon Y in action in the Nintendo Direct… correction… Pokémon Direct video below (the footage is around the 7:15 mark). Suddenly, October 2013 couldn't come soon enough.
* Apparently Nintendo ran out of cool colors or minerals to use for names, so now they're using letters, or chromosomes, depending on how you look at it.
