Hundreds of GameStop locations to shut down in 2013
According to a report released on February 5, GameStop will be closing between 500 and 600 of its 4,471 stores over the course of 2013, putting hundreds, perhaps thousands, of employees out of their jobs.
In hindsight, it was pretty clear that something like this has been a long time coming; ever since digital distribution platforms such as Steam caught on, brick-and-mortar stores have had a rather tough go of it.
GameStop CEO J. Paul Raines had this to say of the closing:
"New software declined at a rate slower than the market, driving another unprecedented 320 basis points of market share growth. The GameStop formula continues to show strong resilience in the face of challenging category headwinds, and the new categories of digital and mobile are creating new profit pools that we are exploiting aggressively."
Well, okay then.
