Schell Games CEO and Puzzle Clubhouse creator insists game demos harm game sales

Speaking at DICE 2013, Schell Games CEO and Puzzle Clubhouse creator Jesse Schell hit the games industry with a bit of a whopper.

Apparently, if you're looking to promote sales for a game, releasing a demo isn't a wise choice. As a matter of fact, a demo will have the opposite effect, as less people will end up buying a title if they get the chance to play a demo first.

According to Schell, and the figures he presented, the best way to generate sales was through a teaser trailer; something that makes people want to try a game, but doesn't give them any opportunity to actually do so without purchasing it. "The thing with no demo," said Schell; "you've gotta buy it if you want to try it."
