Rumor: LucasArts puts Star Wars 1313 on hold
Suspicions have arisen over LucasArts’ most-likely next-gen action-adventure title Star Wars 1313. After strangely going silent since its grand showing at E3 2012, the Rumor Mill is churning out claims that the project has been frozen like Han Solo in carbonite.
The source of these claims is Kotaku, who, citing “three unrelated sources familiar with game development at LucasArts”, says that the project has taken “some tumultuous turns.” These turns are due to the fact that Disney (who bought parent company Lucasfilm last October) has supposedly and abruptly changed LucasArts’ production path, probably in an attempt to release games alongside the new Star Wars film trilogy, the first of which, Episode VII, is scheduled to premiere in 2015.
Should this prove true, it is possible Star Wars 1313 may be unable to meet its original late 2013 release and slide into 2014, probably to get it as close to Episode VII’s release as possible. Also, this could potentially lead to the game missing out on an E3 appearance this year.
Having declined to comment on the matter in detail, LucasArts nonetheless assured that 1313 has not been canceled. “LucasArts has been working diligently to take advantage of the tremendous opportunities that the new Star Wars movies present," a company spokesperson said.
It’s particularly strange that this would happen, as LucasArts said, at the time of Disney’s acquisition, that it would have no effect on the game’s development. If Kotaku is correct, that is no longer the case. With Star Wars 1313’s future a tad on the uncertain side, we can only speculate on what’s going on and when the game may be released.
