EA to cancel The Sims Social, SimCity Social, and Pet Society

NEWS | ? Comments |

Author: Nicholas Greene

Electronic Arts is cutting off several of its largest social games due to a large decline in player activity.

The publisher today announced that it plans to shut down The Sims Social, SimCity Social, and Pet Society by June 14. This, it said, will allow it to reallocate the development resources for these games to other projects. Consequently, users have been instructed that any remaining in-game currency will cease to be valid after shutdown date.

EA terminates The Sims Social, SimCity Social and Pet Society

The curious thing is that AppData reports SimCity Social as averaging five million players on a monthly basis, with both it and Pet Society averaging over 500,000 players on a daily basis.  Why the organization still plans to shut the game down in light of these statistics is not yet clear. This announcement comes right on the heels of the news of massive layoffs at both EA Montreal and EA Ireland.
