Blizzard files trademark for 'The Dark Below'
Another mystery trademark has appeared on the collective desk of the Gamersphere and left us in a state of bemusement, intrigue, and, most of all, pondering. MMO Champion discovered that Blizzard has filed a trademark for “The Dark Below” relating to game software of the online variety.
There are a few options as to what Blizzard intends to use the mark for, but the most likely suspect is a new expansion for World of Warcraft. As the WoW wiki (via NeoGAF) points out, there is mention in the MMO of the Dark Below, while a snippet from a sourcebook for the Warcraft tabletop RPG refers to it as “a place inhabited by demons, devils and infernal creatures, from where some sorcerers take their power directly and sometimes have a patron beast to foster their magic.”
A new expansion might be a good idea for Blizzard to pursue, as WoW has recently seen its subscriber count hit its lowest in years. A new load of content might be what the MMO needs to slow down its apparent decline, though… considering that the sales of the last WoW expansion weren’t that extraordinary…
Anyway, for the time being we can only speculate on what The Dark Below could be. Whatever the case, Blizzard will have big news to share with its fans soon, promising recently that they’ll be making a special announcement at Gamescom next week. The news, judging from the way the company teased it, will likely be related to Diablo III, but it’s possible that Blizzard may also explain what The Dark Below is all about during the event.
We’ll find out if that ends up happening soon enough, won’t we?
