Sony reveals PS4 release date, price drops, new games, and trailers at Gamescom 2013

Gamescom 2013 kicked into full swing today, and finished with a meaty press conference from Sony. They covered a lot of ground, showcasing a huge variety of titles across all their platforms, and sending the hype for the PS4 even further into the stratosphere (if such a thing is even possible). For those of you who haven't seen the conference (or don't care to sit still for two hours), here are the highlights:

The PS4's Release Date

Even though it came at the end of the conference, I'm going to start with the biggest news first: the PlayStation 4 finally has a release date! Set to launch in 32 markets world-wide, Sony's console will be coming to North America on November 15 and to Europe on November 29. It's going to retail at 399 USD / 399 Euros / 314 Pounds.

Price Drops

Sony also announced several price drops, the most significant of which is the Vita's new price of $199.00. Sony plans to also "significantly reduce" the price of memory cards, but they didn't say much else. Also announced was a price drop for the 12 GB Super Slim PS3; the new price of the console is going to be $199, like the Vita.

Cross-Gen Discounts

While we're on the topic of discounts and reduced costs, Sony's Andrew House also announced that anyone who buys Call of Duty: Ghosts, Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag, or Watch Dogs on the PS3 can, for a limited time, digitally purchase any of those titles on PS4 at a "significantly reduced price".

Games

BigFest

One of the more exciting announcements of the day was BigFest, a PS Vita exclusive which allows players to host their own digital, fictional music festival with real bands. Pretty nifty, no?

Contrast

Admittedly, we don't know a whole lot about Contrast quite yet. All we've seen is a brief demo. From this, it appears that the title will have a film-noir feel;  the central mechanic appears to be the ability to fade into the shadows. Very cool.

Everybody's Gone to the Rapture

thechineseroom - the folks responsible for Dear Esther and Amnesia: A Machine for Pigs - revealed it's got another title in the works, this one for the PS4: Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, a bleak-looking post-apocalyptic set in the mid-1980s.

Gran Turismo 6

Proof that Sony still hasn't dismissed the PS3 came in the form of Gran Turismo 6, which will be launching on December 6. It'll be a PS3 exclusive, and will feature a number of concept cars never seen before in the series (or even on real-world roads).

Murasaki Baby

A new title in development for the PS Vita, Murasaki Baby is a somewhat creepy, atmospheric platformer that sort of looks like Braid meets Limbo with an art style reminiscent of Tim Burton. Touch control will be a central element, and players will be able to manipulate the environment in a number of different ways.

LittleBigPlanet Hub

Media Molecule's got a new platformer in the mix with LittleBigPlanet Hub. The most notable thing about this game is that it's going to be free-to-play. Aside from this, it appears as though it's going to follow the tried-and-true formula of previous installments in the series.

Unnamed Naughty Dog Title

Even more exciting is the fact that Sony, Naughty Dog, and Media Molecule are working on a new game. We'll keep you posted when we find out more.

Other New Titles and Ports

In addition to the above, here's a few more games that'll be coming to Sony's various consoles this year:

  • Borderlands 2 (PS Vita)
  • Fez (PS Vita)
  • Football Manager 2014 (PS Vita)
  • Guns of Icarus Online (PS4 exclusive)
  • Hotline Miami 2: Wrong Number (PS4/PS Vita)
  • Minecraft (PS3 / PS4 / PS Vita)
  • N++ (PS4)
  • Rime (PS4)
  • Rogue Legacy (PS4 / PS Vita)
  • Shadow of the Beast (PS4)
  • Starbound (PS Vita)
  • The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth (PS3 / PS4 / PS Vita)
  • Velocity 2X (PS Vita)
  • Volume (PS4 / PS Vita)
  • Wasteland Kings (PS4 / PS Vita)
  • War Thunder (PS4)

A Watch Dogs Movie

According to Ubisoft's Yves Guillemot, the organization intends to partner with Sony to create a blockbuster movie based on Watch Dogs. Though we've no details about the movie at the moment, Guillemot assured Gamescom attendees that this film is "very important for the industry". Along with this news, we were also treated to a new trailer for Watch Dogs

Sony and Virgin Media

In order to ensure that its fans can access all of the online features of the PS4, Sony is partnering with Virgin Media in order to offer broadband bundles which feature dedicated bandwidth for gaming. No word on whether or not this is a Europe-exclusive deal.

PlayStation Plus on the PlayStation 4

Sony also took some time to discuss PS Plus, and proposed some pretty sweet deals surrounding its subscription service. First and foremost, anyone who purchases a PS4 will automatically receive a 15-day free trial of PlayStation Plus. Further, starting tomorrow anyone who signs up for PlayStation Plus will receive an additional 90 days of membership free of charge.

More PS4 Features Detailed

The PS4, explained Sony, will come with Playroom pre-installed. From what today's demo demonstrated for us, it's essentially Sony's answer to the Xbox's Kinect. We also saw Shuhei Yoshida demonstrate the social capabilities of the PS4, by effortlessly joining a friends' Killzone: Shadow Fall Game. He then recorded gameplay footage and tweeted it immediately afterwards. Further, Sony announced a number of media applications, as well as Twitch integration on the PS4.

GTA V Preorder Deal

Sony also announced that fans who pre-order Grand Theft Auto V through the PSN will receive 75% off on any other Rockstar title of their choice. In addition, Sony unveiled a new 500GB PS3 Super Slim bundle, which includes a Blu-Ray copy of GTA V, a headset, and a 30 day PS Plus Membership.

New Trailers

Last, but certainly not least, we were treated to a new demo of Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag as well as trailers for both Killzone: Shadow Fall and inFAMOUS: Second Son (Seen above). In addition, we found out that AC: Black Flag will feature an exclusive area available only on PS3 and PS4.
