Diablo III on PC will remain always-online
Unfortunately, even though Blizzard is killing Diablo III's online auction house, it doesn't look like it'll be taking the next step and adding an offline mode. Blizzard confirmed to Rock Paper Shotgun earlier today that it currently doesn't intend to give players an offline option. In other words, Diablo III on the PC is going to remain an online-only affair, even though the console version isn't.
"We do not have plans to implement an offline mode," responded a Blizzard representative. "While the always-online requirement made the auction house possible, the auction house was never the driving factor in our decision to make the PC version of Diablo III require an Internet connection."
"The game was built from the ground up to take full advantage of Battle.net, which provides a number of important benefits, including persistent server-side character saves, a seamless PC multiplayer experience, cheat prevention, and Real ID and BattleTag social features.”
Sorry, folks. Looks like Blizzard's not going to be budging on this one. Any of you who haven't yet picked up Diablo III might as well spring for the console release -at least you can play that one offline.
