Xbox One exclusive Gears of War 4 characters and cast revealed; PC version remains a possibility
We haven't seen a great deal of Gears of War 4 since its reveal at last year's E3. A single, very cool but dimly lit gameplay video depicting a new hero J.D, and an unknown female companion. It was undeniably a Gears sequel, but who are we playing as? What are these new aliens/monsters we're tackling? It only begged more questions, and since then, developers The Coalition (formerly Black Tusk Studios) have remained pretty tight-lipped about the whole affair.
Only this week have they chosen to speak to the gaming press about the next game in the Xbox franchise - in an exlcusive published by Game Informer the title's principle characters and voice actors were divulged. That J.D guy from the E3 demo? It's only Marcus Fenix's son. He's the one in the middle (courtesy of Game Informer, as you can see).
J.D. Fenix (initials undisclosed), son of legendary war hero Marcus Fenix, ran away from home at a young age to join the COG militia, only to skip out on them after a classified operation that players will learn more about whilst playing the game. He'll be voiced by Liam McIntyre - he was the male lead in the later seasons of Starz series Spartacus (which, if you haven't seen, you should really check out. It's glorious nonsense).
His female buddy goes by Kait Diaz, an outsider brought up by her parents, who led a group of survivors, beyond the relative comforts of the walled-in city-states. A capable survivalist, she's not familiar with the COG, but forms a fast friendship with Marcus Fenix Jnr. Diaz is to be played by Laura Bailey who provides the voice for Jaina Proudmoore in World of Warcraft, as well as Spartan Olympia Vale in Halo 5: Guardians.
The guy on the left, I can find no bigger image for, sadly. Known simply as 'Del' (Dom?), Delmont Walker is a good friend of J.D's, since they met at boarding school, and joined the COG together. Since this 'classified incident', that we'll be so keen to learn more about, the pair have been seeking refuge with the Outsiders - a group of survivors in the wilds of Sera. Eugene Byrd will be stepping in to provide his vocal talents for Del. If you played Battlefield Hardline you might recognise him as another Marcus - 'Boomer' Boone. I didn't. I remember his face from the films 8 Mile and Sleepers.
Game Informer will feature a bunch of other featurettes on Gears of War 4 this month, so if you're interested, pay attention. If something earth-shattering comes up, I might cover it here, but I suspect most of it will be fairly minor. In a recent quickfire Q&A video with studio head, and series veteran, Rod Fergusson it was revealed that a PC version is still a possibility. With Gears of War being a first-party title, and Microsoft recent Xbox/Windows 10 cross-over, it seems only too likely. Do you think that's going to upset the Xbox crowd?
Would it upset you? Should it remain a console exclusive? What do you think of the new characters/cast? Are The Coalition pulling off their attempt at a fully-fledged Gears? What do you think to the new, slimmer character designs? Not a neck in sight. As ever, let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
Eoin has been gaming for twenty-five years, worries he might be getting a little too old for it all, but hopes that he isn't. In the midst of an effort to find a future doing something he loves, he has taken to writing about his one enduring passion - video games.
