"The Legend Of Ayden"

REVIEW |

Author: Scott Vanderheyden

Sacred Odyssey: Rise of Ayden is Gameloft’s latest attempt at bringing a well-known franchise to iOS Devices with little deviation from the source material. A 3D Zelda game akin to Ocarina of Time or Twilight Princess, Sacred Odyssey never achieves the gaming nirvana of the popular franchise it mimics, but with an expansive and engrossing experience worthy of a home console system, it stands out as an excellent value on the App Store.

Sacred Odyssey: Rise of Ayden
- Does it remind you of anything? -

Like many fantasy action / adventure games, Sacred Odyssey’s story is rooted in a generic storytelling fashion that The Lord of the Rings popularized. Basically the story is about Ayden, a seemingly random farmer boy who saves a princess and is told that he is destined to save the world from an unstoppable evil that was sealed a thousand years ago by collecting five artifacts found in various fantasy landscapes like a giant, talking tree and a palace made of ice. Orcs, goblins, slimes, and other nasty creatures will do everything in their power and numbers to stop Ayden in their attempt to please the big, bad evil. It’s a traditional video game story template that reinforces a solid but predictable gameplay progression that starts from humble beginnings to eliminating the world - conquering evil in a level-by-level, dungeon by dungeon fashion.

Borrowing heavily from the Zelda series has plenty of benefits though Sacred Odyssey’s lengthy quest and plethora of side quests offer plenty of gameplay variety, from thought-provoking puzzles, to challenging battles and bosses, to even horse racing. The variety ensures that you will never become bored, and as additional abilities and weapons are unlocked, the standard combat and puzzles become much deeper. Ayden controls well too, with a responsive virtual directional pad and buttons, as well as the ability to rotate the camera with your finger even while moving. Story objectives and sub quests are clear and easy to follow thanks to a well-designed map and navigational arrow. Ayden’s world may not be open-ended, but there are plenty of alternate paths and extra activities to experience, and acquiring new abilities and equipment like the horse dash and power gauntlet open up new areas to explore and a rewarding incentive to return to earlier areas.

Sacred Odyssey: Rise of Ayden
- Boss battles and an expansive world make it an engaging game -

Although Sacred Odyssey’s environments and characters are larger than life, the borrowed designs and concepts are as unoriginal as the gameplay. The environmental fog allows the game to run smoothly, but takes away from the large scope. Also, the high-resolution textures are often muddy, and there are some graphical glitches like object tearing at times. Character animation looks forceful and fluid in combat, but climbing ladders, conversing with characters, and interacting with objects are either floaty, logically make no sense, or transition abruptly. The fantasy soundtrack and sound effects are generic but grow on you, and the little tune that plays after completing a puzzle or collecting an item add character and impact. The voice acting hits and misses, but several characters are purposefully comical including a deranged bird merchant and a group of dumb ogres.

Sacred Odyssey: Rise of Ayden may not do anything new with its overly borrowed source material, but the solid gameplay and graphics, variety of activities to perform, and lengthy completion time make it a worthy download especially for those looking for a 3D Zelda experience on the iPad, iPhone, or iPod Touch.

GameDynamo's Score for Sacred Odyssey: Rise Of Ayden (Mobile)
Graphics
Organic environments are large and detailed, and characters offer a variety of designs. Textures are muddy at times, and certain animated actions are laugh-inducing like ladder climbing. There’s a heavy use of environmental fog.
Sound
Although the fantasy soundtrack is generic, it starts to grow on you. The voice acting and sound effects are mostly poor, but there are some memorable and intentionally funny voices.
Gameplay
Offers traditional action / adventure gameplay with excellent variety and pacing. The one-note combat could use more attack options, but riding a horse, using items to solve puzzles, and just exploring Ayden’s world are all enjoyable and create a cohesive and absorbing experience.
Play Value
Ayden’s adventure will take a dozen or so hours to complete with plenty of side quests to complete and treasures to collect. Sacred Odyssey is an excellent value that would easily cost $40 on other handheld devices.

Final Score  70
A wholly unoriginal action / adventure title that manages to be fresh on Apple devices thanks to an expansive world, a variety of gameplay types, and loads of content.
