"Futuristic Racing for your PlayStation Vita"
It's been a long time since the WipEout series graced itself on a portable console. The last time was when WipEout was released as a launch title on the PSP. Now that the PlayStation Vita is now out, we once again have a WipEout title for our portable console. While WipEout 2048 comes with some interesting features and fun gameplay, it isn't exactly a revolutionary step in the series.
Right off the bat WipEout 2048 looks great. The graphics show really well on the PlayStation Vita's OLED screen, and everything from the vehicles and tracks look great. One issue I had, however, is that many of the tracks are hard to navigate due to the graphics. If you ever played WipEout on the PlayStation 3, it was pretty obvious to tell where you wanted to go based on the art style. In 2048, however, it is harder, since many of the tracks have elements on them that can make it hard at times to distinguish where there is a wall and where there isn't one.

The soundtrack for the WipEout series has always been really great. This game is no exception; awesome, fast-paced, futuristic techno music is all over this game. It gives WipEout 2048 a really energetic feel, which it should, since it's a high-speed racing game.
My one complaint is that WipEout 2048 doesn't really do a good job of using the Vita's cool features to do anything substantial. There is a different control mode which lets you pilot your vehicle using the tilt controls on the Vita, but it doesn't work very well. You're better off just using the regular control scheme to play. The other feature this version of WipEout takes advantage of is the cross play feature with the PlayStation 3 version. Players can race against each other on either console whether they're at home or on the go.
Like the PlayStation 3 version, WipEout 2048 does have an online multiplayer mode, but you must be connected to a WiFi hotspot in order to race against others.

Overall, WipEout 2048 is a good game like it always has been, but you won't find anything revolutionary about this title. That being said, it's disappointing that a Vita launch title doesn't take more advantage of the exclusive features the device has to offer. That doesn't mean you shouldn't play WipEout 2048, it just means you should be aware that you won't be getting anything new.
