"Welcome to Chicago"
Last year, when I placed my pre-order for the PlayStation 4, I decided to also pre-order Watch Dogs. Unfortunately, the Ubisoft product was delayed. Perhaps the most anticipated game of the next-gen era, Watch Dogs was held to the highest of standards. The question is, does it live up to the hype?
Watch Dogs centers around hacker Aiden Pearce in his quest for vengeance. Aiden is equipped with various weapons, his hacking skills, and parkour. The game, like many open-world games set in the modern era, reminds me of Grand Theft Auto. You can steal cars in exactly the same way you steal cars in Grand Theft Auto In some ways it also reminds me of Assassin’s Creed, where you need to solve puzzles to unlock the various landmarks across Chicago. A PvP element is introduced where players can “invade” each other. Depending on the PvP mode, the host player will either hack or be hacked in order to gain information and unlock more abilities. As Aiden, you assume the role of a vigilante where you can track down criminals and bring them to justice. Whether that justice is a swift beating with your collapsible baton or a bullet between the eyes, that decision is up to you.
Watch Dogs provides decent sound overall. The soundtrack features artists like Weezer, Iggy and The Stooges, 2Chainz, and Nas. The gunfire and cars meet today’s standards, but nothing sounds really exciting. I know it’s just nitpicking, but for example, in one scene Aiden is talking to his sister. No matter how far away you walk from her, you can still hear her as if you are standing right next to her.
Visually, Watch Dogs looks good, but not amazing either. It could have been the hype machine, but I was expecting to be blown away and really find the reason why I purchased a next-gen system.
Watch Dogs truly is a victim of a long delay and its own hype. The hype is a disservice to the game. While I still view Watch Dogs as a very enjoyable gaming experience, I have to admit that I was disappointed.
