"A Very Special Edition Indeed"
Mass Effect 3: Special Edition for Wii U gives Nintendo gamers their first taste of the masterful sci-fi RPG, and what a taste it is! Using the Wii U GamePad, players have new ways of controlling Commander Shepard and, especially, his squadmates.
For example, players can use the touch screen on the GamePad to issue tactical orders, activate and customize squad abilities, and view enemy positions on the fly. Perhaps most amazingly, players can play the entirety of the game through the GamePad, allowing others full use of the TV.
In addition to the new controls, Mass Effect 3: Special Edition is a truly enhanced gaming experience compared to all other versions of the game. On the game disc, players will have access to a total of six pieces of bonus content. For starters, Genesis II, a vibrant, interactive comic from Dark Horse Comics, will allow players to familiarize themselves with the overarching story covered in Mass Effect and Mass Effect 2, choosing how the narrative flows at key junctures and leave a lasting mark on Commander Shepard’s story going forward in ME3.
Also included with the Special Edition of Mass Effect 3 for Wii U is the Mass Effect 3: Extended Cut (the alternative ending that "rights" the much-maligned final moments of the trilogy), as well as the Mass Effect 3: From Ashes single-player DLC pack. Additionally, three other pieces of multiplayer content have been shoe-horned into the game: Mass Effect 3: Resurgence, Mass Effect 3: Rebellion, and Mass Effect 3: Earth.
Online co-op multiplayer is also available in Mass Effect 3: Special Edition. In the four-player cooperative missions you can choose from several races and classes, and what you do will influence the single-player campaign.
In case you're wondering, the graphics of Mass Effect 3: Special Edition look great on Wii U. It's exciting to finally see a Nintendo system display the quality graphics we've come to love. However, the shiny, almost plastic-looking character models we've come to expect from the series have not been altered, so don't expect more refined visuals.
All in all, my time spent with the game was a blast! If you haven't played Mass Effect 3 yet, this is your chance to have the most complete experience at a lower price, all on one disc, since the PC, Xbox 360, and PS3 versions don't include all this content. That said, there's one drawback. Surprisingly, the Wii U version of Mass Effect 3 doesn't include the Leviathan or Omega DLC, and it sounds like they won't be coming either.
