"A Different Exercise Experience for Kinect"
Zumba Fitness Core is a pretty different workout experience for Xbox Kinect. With the video game version of the popular series having got its start on the Wii, seeing a Kinect exercise game that doesn't actively tell you to adjust your body into a certain pose can make the experience feel like something you're just coasting along with. While this may be the major downfall of the title coming over to Kinect, similar to the exercise phenomenon it's based on, Zumba Fitness Core is what you make of it.
Unlike many other series of Kinect games, Zumba Fitness Core isn't meant to replace a previous title, with this version intended to focus on the player's abs. With my playtime with the title, this became apparent as I performed more and more routines, and it's enhanced further by doing as the game says and holding in the core. Aside from simply going through the routines, Zumba Fitness Core helps the player by letting them set exercise goals, and if really looking for a challenge, view and compete on leaderboard.
As mentioned before, Zumba Fitness Core doesn't let the player know if they got a step correct in the middle of a song. The only way to know is by looking in the corner of the screen, away from the instructor or by activating euphoria (a combo of correct moves), which is a better gauge of success since the scene changes more. This, in turn, gives the game a bit of a learning curve as players get adjusted to the nature of the game's systems. Coming from other Kinect titles which have more pronounced ways to tell the player something isn't being done correctly to this simply took a few songs to get through, and in the process, it made me look at the game in a completely different way: just have fun!
Zumba Fitness Core is a different experience from other exercise titles out on Kinect. The title can stand on its own for those who want to try and see what Zumba is all about, but at the same time, it offers features that instantly help the player dive into the Zumba community with simple touches such as a class locator that can help player's tone up arguably better than any video game can. As long as one doesn't go in expecting a "game" and instead an exercise experience, Zumba Fitness Core is a great title to buy.
