"Watch That Granny Roll"
I've played my fair share of strange iOS games, amongst them well-known titles where you fling birds with slingshots or cut ropes to feed candy to little monsters. However, as far as strangeness is concerned, Granny Smith pretty much stands above the rest of them.
The premise of Granny Smith kicks off the wackiness: an old granny is sitting on her porch, enjoying the sight of her green apple trees (the apples are green, hence the game's title), when along comes a masked and roller-blading fat boy who dastardly makes off with the apples. Angered, the granny dons a pair of skates herself and goes after the boy. It's delightfully quirky, and it sets the gameplay up very well indeed.
That gameplay, speaking of which, has you skating through 2D levels spread across three zones and filled with various hurdles for you to avoid. Controls are simple in Granny Smith. The granny rolls through the stages automatically, meaning your main concerns are making sure she does not crash into anything. This is done through two buttons, one for jumping (holding it makes the granny flip through the air) and one for grabbing onto things like swings and zip lines with her cane.
The main objective of Granny Smith also is relatively simple, and that is collecting three apples placed throughout, while making sure the fat boy, who is skating along the path with you, does not get them first. The levels, which take you from farm settings to city streets and then to seaside factories, start off relatively easy, with simple hurdles that are easy to jump over, but soon the game ups the challenge with new obstacles. Luckily, the physics work well, making jumping and swinging through the air feel good and fun to pull off.
Adding to the experience is that quirkiness I mentioned up top. As she goes, the granny will swing through the air like an acrobat, zoom down zip-lines at high speeds, and plow through more walls than I could count in her mad-cap race for the apples (two words: hardcore biddy).
Aside from collecting apples before the fat boy can get to them, players play to achieve as high a score as possible in each stage. This is done mainly by pulling off good landings after flying through the air (with bonus points added for pulling off multiple flips).
The proceedings get some added variety through special items, which can be purchased with coins gathered throughout the stages. These items include protective helmets (which keep the granny from harm if she crashes or lands poorly), baseballs that can slow down the fat boy if he is pulling ahead or break some incoming obstacles, and banana peels to keep him from catching up if he is behind.
That's pretty much the entirety of what Granny Smith has to offer in terms of gameplay. While playing as a wild old lady on roller blades was always enjoyable, I have to admit the gameplay is rather sparse. Each of the 36 levels can be done with in less than a minute, and it usually isn't too difficult to clear them with all the apples. Replay value is kind of limited, as it only comes from trying to get better scores and watching the replay videos of each stage's best run (or zip-lining the granny through a house a few more times).
Still, for a dollar, Granny Smith has enough to warrant a purchase. Its delightfully wacky premise, simple but fun gameplay, and well-executed physics make for a game that, while a tad sparse and quickly exhausted, should please whoever who try it.
I mean, how can you not be pleased by this game? It has an old granny using her cane to slide down zip-lines. I rest my case.
