"Go Go Super Samurai!"
Bandai's Power Rangers Super Samurai is the ultimate game in the long-running series history, because it actually lets you become a Power Ranger from head to toe. Having played the game at the age of 25 is both a gift and a curse. Now, I am well aware of the responsibility involved with being able to draw kanji in thin air to put on my Power Ranger outfit: at times it's great, but ultimately it can be boiled down to a few motions that I can rely on to get me through the day.
Taking place in the realm of the Super Samurai season of the series, Power Rangers Super Samurai allows the player to take on the role of one of the five Power Rangers as they play through scenarios from the TV show. For those who are acquainted with the format of the show (long breath), basically the rangers chill and try to make it through everyday life until a monster comes through who doesn't know who they are trying to mess with; the rangers then transform and don their heroic outfit and basically kick butt until the daily monster decides to grow huge, at which point the rangers combine their robot vehicles to create the Megazord, whom ultimately destroys the monster.
Power Rangers Super Samurai does a good job at this, letting players choose one of the five rangers and basically going at the format mentioned above. However, while it's accurate, the gameplay is VERY (capitals for emphasis) basic. There are only a handful of motions to do throughout the whole game: punching and kicking enemies, jumping and ducking, and dodging and summoning a powerful attack to defeat an enemy. The Zord transformation offers a few others, but the gameplay is very basic and there aren’t an awful lot of reasons to go back and replay the levels. A major gripe I had is that while the rest of the game is easy, I had a lot of trouble triggering the finishing move while in ranger mode. Thankfully, there really isn't a "Game Over", and players are able to resurrect their character when they have run out of health.
