"Choose the Darker Path..."
It's here! Might & Magic Heroes VI: Shades of Darkness, the newest expansion to the collection, features five factions including Haven, Inferno, Necropolis, Stronghold, and Sanctuary. Before you begin, you should read up on all of the factions to learn about their strenghts, weaknesses, warfare, recent events, worship, capital city, and country / kingdom. Discover the creatures in each faction by clicking on the faction and scrolling through. Personally, I spent a good amount of time just checking out all of the unique creatures that each faction had to offer.
New to the game? Let me briefly fill you in. The Shades of Darkness expansion takes place 400 years before Might & Magic Heroes V (564 YSD, or Year of the Seventh Dragon, to be exact). This game explores the story of the Griffin Dynasty. Griffin Duke Pavel was slain by a Demon host who was summoned by the enemy leaving his son, Slava, to be the only boy left during that time. Pavel's sister, Sveltana, had to return from her life as a Necromancer in the Seven Cities to teach Slava the ways of the Griffin. Fast forward fifteen years later... Duke Slava of Griffin has five children. These are the main heroes of the game which will lead the factions into battle.
The game is endless fun, and I love the unique characters. The controls are simple and it's easy to follow along. Explore gigantic adventure maps, build cities, and collect resources. Level up your heroes, kick your tactics up a notch, and defeat the enemy. You'll need to recruit troops to bring into battle, and you'll need to defeat enemies that are guarding the gates that just might lead to a secret or treasure. Do you dare to visit these eerie and mysterious lands to improve your skills?
Choose your destiny by choosing one of two distinct paths. Follow your insticts, and your blood will guide you in the right direction. Or... choose the path of Tears. This is the path for the adventurous explorer who questions the complexity of a situation and tries to gain knowledge about everything. You could say this path is for a curious player which just so happens to be myself. On this path, you will be filled with happiness and excitement as well as sadness and, well, tears. Choose your path wisely! You must follow it to its end. Take part in this epic adventure and accept your destiny... whether it be with blood or tears.
Might & Magic Heroes VI: Shades of Darkness is a much needed expansion with a captivating conclusion and a necessary addition to a fan's collection. Even if you've never played this game before, Shades of Darkness is an ideal initiation game to become a fan of Might & Magic. If you're a fan of RPGs, strategy games, or just games with endless adventures and quests, this game is for you. The map reminds me of classic favorites of mine like Oblivion and Fable (I, II and III). I love having a giant map to explore! It makes it hard to put this game down when there is still so much ground to cover and so many adventures awaiting.
As with previous Might & Magic titles, the gamer can choose between single-player or multiplayer to control a number of heroes and towns and command armies of creatures. Do I have any complaints? As with any game, there are always at least a few.
Here we go. There are limited resources and skills. I would have also liked a greater variety of races and abilities. The combat is just as it is in their other installments, and I would have liked to see it more action-packed and well... exciting.
The gameplay in Might & Magic Heroes VI: Shades of Darkness is fun but a little glitchy - make sure you have a strong internet connection. Overall, don't let this keep you from enjoying the game! So you might have to wait a few minutes for it to load. Worth it. Expect hours of fun taking on each campaign (my recommendation? Necropolis... vampires, killing the already dead enemy, liches... Yes, please!) and embarking on an epic adventure. I mean... there's always a darker path, right?
