"AC4 Lives Up to the Hype"

REVIEW |

Author: Exequiel Roman III

Many players felt disappointed with Assassin’s Creed III.  Some even called it a step back in the successful franchise.  Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag was marketed with extra hype and a different character.  This character is the pirate captain Edward Kenway, the father of Haytham and grandfather of Connor, both characters we met in Assassin’s Creed III.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, XB1, PS Vita, Wii U)

The landscapes and architecture is always spot on with Assassin’s Creed games, I think one of my favorite towns simply based on how it looks has to be Havana.  Upon my first synchronization I was left breathless at how much detail was put into the buildings and even the sky was beautiful.  The way that the purplish pink sky is scraped with clouds of white left me in awe.  The costumes and characters are rendered flawlessly.   Edward’s robes really hangs low and heavy as if it were real leather.  The ships are gorgeous and the Jackdaw has options of changing the sails, figurehead, and steering wheel allowing players to customize their own Jackdaw.  The animations of Edward Kenway’s assassinations are fun to watch and definitely hold a different flavor than that of his son and grandson.  It seems less refined than that of the gentlemanly Haytham, but less wild than that of Connor.  One thing, for sure, Edward’s assassinations are more brutal than both.

The sound is also some of the best in video gaming.  The music sets the tone, but while sailing the Caribbean, your crew will burst out into shanties to pass the time.  Edward can collect shanties when he visits towns in the same manner as Connor collected pages from Ben Franklin’s almanac.  The piers of the towns also have all the sounds you would imagine from a pier with bells the background conversations.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, XB1, PS Vita, Wii U)

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag retains all of the parkour-heavy action that the series is known for.  Players can still hide in haystacks or around corners before striking out with the trademark hidden blade.  The fact that Edward sports extra holsters to allow extra pistols is a fun way to take out enemies in rapid succession.  The blowgun is also really fun to use allowing to either put their enemies to sleep or confuse them into attacking their own comrades.  In previous releases of the game, I felt the present day storylines were kind of boring to play.  Now there is a mini-game that allows you to hack into your Abstergo co-worker’s computers and gain information on what happened to Desmond Miles at the conclusion of Assassin’s Creed III. If the main game wasn’t enough to satisfy your crave for action, you can find more missions in the multi-player mode.  The multi-player mode has modes where you can work together or work solo and hunt each other down in a similar way that Assassin’s Creed III played.

The biggest and most obvious change of all is the ship battles.  We received a little bit of a taste in Assassin’s Creed III, but I felt the controls were a little difficult and I acknowledge that I’m in the minority of those that didn’t really care for the naval combat.  Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag on the other hand is a completely different story.  The level of depth of the naval combat is uncanny.  Players take the helm of the Jackdaw where they can go to pretty much anywhere on the map.  Weapons include the broadside cannons, chain shots, mortars, and fire barrels.  Pirating had never been so fun.  I actually got sidetracked for not just one but a few hours just going around amassing my fortune by taking out various merchant ships.  My favorite tactic is after crippling a ship, I would have Edward jump off the Jackdaw, swim to the enemy ship and assassinate the whole crew prior to getting back on the Jackdaw and boarding the ship to take all of its goods.  For those that would prefer to just board the ship and have the whole crew attack, that’s an option too.  Instead of having a brotherhood of assassins, this is replaced by a fleet of ships where you can send a ship from your fleet on missions and engage in their own combat.  For players that may be concerned with having to sail from point A to point B and back to point A, can rest assured that once you visit a place, you can fast travel to save some time and the distraction of more plunder.

Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (PS3, Xbox 360, PS4, XB1, PS Vita, Wii U)

Ubisoft released a lot of promo footage and hyped up this game not too long after they released Assassin’s Creed III.  Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag, I feel, definitely lives up to that hype.  They took a feature that I didn’t really like and brought it to the forefront and made me fall in love with that feature.

GameDynamo's Score for Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag (PS3)
Graphics
Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag pushes the limits of the current-gen systems. Simply beautiful.
Sound
The chanteys are fun and nothing feels out of place.
Gameplay
It's still fun to assassinate enemies, and now we can plunder and wreak havoc on the high seas!
Play Value
The biggest Assassin's Creed adventure to date. Plenty to do, places to explore, and more...

Final Score  96Editors Choice
In reality, Assassin's Creed III really feels like a beta test when compared to Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag.
