I can’t deny it, I love pinball. To this day, it’s hard for me to resist hopping onto a pinball machine when I see one and dropping a couple of quarters in for a game. Star Wars Pinball is the latest release from Zen Studios for their Pinball FX2 table themes. To clear up any confusion for those new to Zen Studio pinball platform, these themes are far from simple skins, but essentially standalone games. The Star Wars Pinball set includes three tables: Boba Fett, Clone Wars, and Empire Strikes Back.
To begin, you will pick either to play the dark side or light side. This won’t affect the tables in any way, but it will determine for which side of the force you are earning points so you can become a Jedi or a Sith. Once you start, you’ll quickly realize Star Wars Pinball is, well, pinball… but what amazes us here are the astounding details and graphics put into the table. From the realistic flashing and flickering of the bonus lights, the smooth and quick motions of the flippers and balls, pinball fans will fall in love at first sight.
Part of a good pinball experience is the sounds from the machine, both electronic and physical. The clunks and clacks of the table, the repetitive movie sounds and quotes when you get bonus points, the ambient music coming from the speakers, Star Wars Pinball provides it all. In fact, it does it so well, I found myself coming back over and over again to play. Despite the in-game bumpers not feeling exactly as powerful as the real world ones, Star Wars Pinball feels very authentic.
Fortunately, for those looking for just a bit more than traditional pinball recreation, Star Wars Pinball offers plenty of detailed 3D models too. Whether its Darth Vader or Stormtroopers stomping across your table, or a light saber swooping by, it adds a bit more depth than real life pinball tables can offer.
The design of each table is well executed too. It seems Zen Studios really knows what they’re doing when it comes to creating a satisfying pinball experience through table geography and physics. The Clone Wars table has a lot of nice swooping ramps and "ball tunnels"; Empire Strikes Back has a retro feeling to it all; and Boba Fett’s table has a Sarlacc Pit (pretty cool!). The addition of a "score screen" where you can, in typical pinball fashion, see your score, watch hazy images of the film play out, and see ball counts, makes Star Wars Pinball a true replication of the original pinball experience. We look forward to future Star Wars table releases!
GameDynamo's Score for Star Wars Pinball (X360)
Three things describe Rando: Good beer, good food, and video games. On occasion, Rando flies a zeppelin through time seeking power crystals.
