"The Last Adverb....... Hopefully"
Face it: you already know if you were going to buy or upgrade to Ultra Street Fighter IV before you even read this review. While there is a good amount of extra content, what's added is a bit rough around the edges and as a result makes it difficult to find what's new aside from the additional characters.
Taking the extra characters and stages from Street Fighter x Tekken, Ultra Street Fighter IV brings all the extra Street Fighter content from that game home to the game that made the crossover possible. Elena, Rolento, Poison and Hugo's appearance in the previous games made the fans wish for them to be brought over and their wish has been granted. The characters have transitioned over to Street Fighter IV with no hitch and expand the roster to 44. In addition there's another new fighter, Decapre, who plays and looks similar to Cammy but has a few new tricks up her sleeve and adds a new play style to the series.
While the roster and stage additions are immediately noticeable, there are three new gameplay additions that change the game a lot. The first one that everyone will see is the ability to have both of a character's Ultras available during a match with overall reduced damage. This gives characters such as Rose more options and makes some characters like Zangief even scarier.
The other additions aren't as pronounced but can drastically affect the flow of a match. The first one is the Red Focus, which takes up two stocks of super meter and lets your character absorb multiple hits without damage. The other one is delayed wakeup, and allows you to delay getting up after being knocked down, similar to a 3D fighting game. While these change the meta-game, being more casual with Street fighter IV, I didn't really use these additions often.
While all the new content is great, what I didn't really like was that the characters introduced in this update or the previous update, Arcade Edition, don't have trials. In addition the game doesn't have a tutorial for using the Red Focus or the delayed wakeup; I had to sift through a digital version from the main menu to even see the input for it. While it sounds trivial, the trials and tutorials are what get many people eager to explore the gameplay and for them to not have been updated in over 4 years makes much of the new content hit or miss for me.
As I said before, you pretty much knew whether or not you were going to purchase Ultra Street Fighter IV before you even clicked on this article. If this is your first entry in the Street Fighter IV series, you are in for a treat; and if you're upgrading, this update is pretty much worth it if you're willing to put in the effort to explore the new content.
This update is definitely more substantial than the Arcade Edition from 3 years ago, and while this expansion is the biggest yet since the original Super Street fighter IV was released, the add-on nature of it requires more effort on the player to see much of the newer gameplay additions.
